Baikasai: Memories 2007

Naohiro, geiko of Kamishichiken.

Kitano Tenmangu Shrine's famous Baikaisai, or Plum Blossom Festival, is held every February 25th in memory of the deified patron saint of scholarship, Sugawara Michizane, a Heian Era court official and avid plum blossom admirer. After graduating from the national academy, he began his ill-fated career at court as a scholar. Although he was elevated in rank under the grace of Emperor Uda, his rivalry with a member of the powerful Fujiwara family resulted in his banishment from court. Demoted to the rank of a minor official in Kyushu, he died a lonely death with a dishonored name.

After his death, plague and drought spread throughout the capital. The emperor's sons began to die in rapid succession. The Imperial Palace's Great Audience Hall (shishinden) was repeatedly struck by lightning as the city was drenched by rainstorms and floods. Attributing this to the angry spirit of the exiled Sugawara, the imperial court built and dedicated Kitano Tenmangu shrine to him, posthumously restoring his title and office. All mention of his exile was struck from the record and Sugawara was deified as Tenjin-sama, or kami of scholarship. Today many Shinto shrines in Japan are dedicated to him.

I never really got around to uploading many of the pictures I took at last year's Baikasai, and since I can't be there this year, I'd like to share these with you now. Enjoy!

Yasunari Kawabata, the first Japanese to win the nobel prize (1968) once wrote "If for no other reason than to preserve traditional hairstyles, the geisha's existance is vital. I wonder how and when these hairstyles developed."

"Japanese men, as a rule, feel about a woman's neck and throat about the same way as men in the west feel about a woman's legs. This is why geisha wear the collars of their kimono so low in the back...I suppose that its like a woman in Paris wearing a short skirt."

Go Speedracer, Go!

Here he comes, here comes SPEEDRACER!

One of the great things about being back in the good ol' US of A is the relative ease and inexpence of going to the movies. Sure, in a big city like Tokyo, Osaka, or Nagoya, a movie theater may not be far away, but it's always expensive. A ticket usually costs about ¥1800, but if you're lucky enough to live in a beautiful place like Ena (inaka: countryside), you also have to factor in the roughly hour-long train ride into town at ¥1100 each way. Altogether that's about $35, not to mention the total investment of a day since the entire affair will take no less than four and a half hours. All this for the rare privledge of watching a movie that's probably already available on mininova on an unusually small screen(compared to their counterparts in the States, that is.)

In my hometown, movie theaters are many and the prices are right. Before 6'o clock a mere $6.25 will get you a comfy reclining seat in a spacious stadium-style theater complete with a perfect, puffy hair-free view of an enormous screen. WhatI saw on that screen the last time I went to the movies was a teaser-trailer for none other than the classic Japanese anime SPEEDRACER!

Perhaps I'm exposing my overwhelming nerdiness by admiting it (if I haven't already), but I think it looks most cool... Like anime- ALIVE!

Check out the original Japanese opening:

Here's the Americanized version:

And may I just say, Anime has come a LONG way (^_<)

BPR At The Finale - Part 4

We are still not done sharing our story from the Project Runway finale! After the show, we were excited to attend an after-brunch party hosted by Bravo. It was like a giant reunion, with designers from all four seasons in attendance.
The brunch was a chance to get up close and personal with the designers and celebrities. We have some great candid photos from this event including shots of Raymundo Baltazar, Bradley Baumkirchner (in a teddy bear sweater!), Malan Breton, Kevin Christiana, Chloe Dao, Marla Duran, Katy Gerdes, Kayne Gillaspie, Kara Janx, Elisa Jimenez, Alison Kelly, Mychael Knight, Simone LeBlanc, Dale Levitski, Jack Mackenroth, Jay McCarroll, Gail Simmons, Nick Verreos, Daniel Vosovic and Carmen Webber. Whew!

Project Runway in Elle Magazine

The March issue of Elle magazine (which was featured in the gift bags at the Bryant Park show) has several Project Runway features. The "En Garde" winners Christian Siriano and Chris March have their TRESemme ad reward; for Season Four there are a total of 3 pages prominently featuring the avant-garde look including this two-page spread. You'll find the ads on pages 311-313. You can click here for photos from that challenge.

Our friends at Bluefly have a two-page spread on pages 328-329 that shows how accessories make it work.

You can also find this Elle Project Runway magazine between pages 408 and 409 that features the office of Nina Garcia and an interview with Season One winner Jay McCarroll.

Finally, Levi has a four-page ad from pages 277-280 that features images from the seven looks in their denim challenge. You can click here to rate looks for their Project Runway challenge.

Top 5 Looks From Season 4

As we wait patiently for the denouement of Season 4, it's time once again to roll out our popular "Top 5 Looks Poll". Now that everyone has had a chance to see all of the designs and challenges this season, which 5 are your favorites?
Probably the easiest way to look at all of the garments is to go to Bravo's Rate The Runway page where you can sort by episode. To keep everyone consistent, list your five favorites in the comments by number, designer(s) name(s) and challenge like this:
1 - Jack Mackenroth "Sew Us What You Got" challenge
2 - Chris March "What A Girl Wants" challenge
3 - Elisa Jimenez/Sweet P "SJP/Bitten" challenge
4 - Kevin Christiana "What's The Skinny" challenge
5 - Michael Kors "Orange County" challenge (Well, that last one wouldn't count, but you get the idea...)
We'll tally the results and reveal your Top 5 picks in a special countdown beginning on March 1. It's your chance to celebrate the uncelebrated and right some judging wrongs. Who from Season 4 will join Andrae Gonzalo and Robert Best as a Top 5 Looks champion?

What Would Bluefly Do?

Christian Siriano's winning look from Episode Eleven certainly gave Team Bluefly a lot to work with.

Black pants... well that is kind of an unusual shape isn't it? Really tight at the bottom, room in the thigh. Hmmmmm... Sure wish I had legs like Lisa.... I like these the best I think:

Habitual Black Stretch Jeans $87.99.

The Recap of the Manolo!

The Manolo really outdoes himself this week with the tale of the little fairy elf:

It was then, while the tailor was sleeping his uneasy sleep, that the most miraculous thing happened.

First, there was the faint sound of tiny bells, followed by the strong scent of Aqua Net and Elizabeth Taylor’s “White Diamonds”, and then, with the audible pop, the tiny little fashion elf appeared out of no where! Flouncing around the room, scattering fairy dust and candy kisses.

A must read!

Poll - Who Was the Decoy?

By now you know that either Chris March or Rami Kashou presented a decoy collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Based upon the 3 best looks in each of their collections, one of them will advance to the finals and will compete against Christian Siriano and Jillian Lewis for the win. So now we ask you two questions:

And which garments do you think they selected as their best?

Tell us in the comments.

Entertainment Weekly has posted a great exit interview with Sweet P, Thanks Frank.

The Watcher has posted some interesting behind-the-scenes clips from Bryant Park. Thanks Mo.

The Baltimore Sun has posted a story about Christian Siriano.

The New York Post wraps up last night's episode.

Episode Eleven in 60 Seconds

MTV's Jim Cantiello is back with his 60-second Recap!

Congratulations, Christian

This is the third time in Season 4 that you have won. You made your client happy when you made over her favorite outfit and you thrilled Nina and the other judges with the avant-garde gown. This week you created a complex garment based upon a painting that was artfully executed and masterfully styled. Throughout the season you have demonstrated a clear point of view and your finale collection was selected as the most likely to win and most deserving of the win by our readers (click here). You provoke discussion and you leave us always curious to see your next work and those are attributes that any designer would long to have. Cheers, Christian!

This post is only for positive words for Christian Siriano or his work. If you have anything negative to say about him or another designer, please click here.

BPR Love for Sweet P

The designer out when there are five remaining is always a heartbreaker (Robert Plotkin in Season 1, Nick Verreos in Season 2 and Kayne Gillaspie in Season 3). Our readers thought that you had the best garment in both the prom challenge and the denim challenge. There really weren't any losers this week because in spite of being 'auf' you had the opportunity to show a collection at Bryant Park. From arm-wrestling with Christian to being the muse of MTV's Jim Cantiello, you proved that you were always a winner without ever needing to bring out the evil opposite of Sweet P, Mean P. Michael Kors said that your garments are wearable and flattering and Project Runway has given your work an audience that will want to purchase your products. Before Runway, you were the former biker chick that we wanted to hang with but now we see you as having a vision and a point of view (and we still want to hang with you) - that is a winning situation.

This post is only for positive words for Sweet P. Anything negative or about another designer can be discussed here.

Reactions to Episode 11

Bravo throws a little wrench in the proceedings with a twist at the end. Post your reactions to episode 11 here.

Episode 11 Party!

Shhhhhhh!!! You are kindly asked to keep your voice down please as you enter the magnificence of our BPR Hall of Art. Inside we encourage you to peruse the curiosities found in our famous Wendy Pepper lollipop gallery and soak in the masterpieces of Libretti, Vidal, and Morganza.

If you need a rest, please join your friends in the Franco lounge where our hippy-dippy staff of art snobs may or may not choose to serve you. On the schedule this evening is a special exhibit from the Magical Elves, titled "Project Runway". This is the type of work that lends itself to communal criticism, so please join us, won't you?

BPR Live Play-by-Play: Episode 11

Tensions should be running high on tonight's episode of Project Runway as the last elimination challenge determines whose Bryant Park collection gets to count. Tbone is back in the play-by-play booth ready to provide coverage of all the drama as we watch Episode 11: "The Art of Fashion".

Comments under this post are for Tbone's use only. Follow along if you are stranded without Bravo this evening. If you have something to say, by all means join us in the party room post above!

Poll Results - Your Finale Predictions

Many of you have seen the Project Runway Season 4 Finale Collections and we knew that you would have opinions. You certainly did not disappoint! We took two polls to gauge your response to the garments featured last Friday at Bryant Park and the results are in. You predicted that Christian Siriano WILL win the finale and SHOULD win the finale (click here for both poll results). Will our readers predictions hold true? Watch what happens!

T.G.I.W.

So it has come down to this. Five designers remaining and an uncertain number of finalist spots available. Yes of course all five showed brilliantly at Bryant Park last week, but which ones will count? All should be revealed tonight as we prepare for the last (we think) elimination challenge of Season 4.

Team BPR is back in their jammies for this episode as Tbone will provide play-by-play and the party room will be open for show time. Make sure to check back in afterwards and tell us what you think in the reactions thread, it should be hopping!

To help while away the hours before showtime, resident prognosticator Alan Gratz has posted his predictions about tonight's episode. And BPR reader Julie has spotted Season 1 model Melissa Haro in the SI Swimsuit issue! Oh, my.

Ask The Fashion Professor

FIT Fashion Professor, Anthony Cady tackles two more reader questions. The first is from Kathryn:

Dear Fashion Professor,

"The work 'talent' seems to get tossed around pretty liberally applied to fashion designers and Project Runway. What is 'talent' anyway'? Are the designers on the show 'talented'?

Who has been the most talented designer on PR in your opinion?

Thanks,

Kathryn

And this one is from Kate:

Dear Professor,

In today's BPR interview with Victorya Hong, she is quoted as saying, "I think Rami showed a strong collection as well, but I couldn´t understand his color story, and the progression of design."

What exactly doe these two concepts mean and how do they play into judging the success or failure of a collection. For example, I really loved JIllian's collection but have no idea why in the middle of it there was that black and white striped top with the loopy sleeves. What role did that play in her color story and progression of design.

Thank you.

Kate C

BPR at The Finale - Part Three

Laura K: After the show we worked our way down to the runway hoping to interview some of the designers and audience members.

Tbone: I tried to make a play on Heidi but was immediately crushed by the crowd. This was definitely not my scene. I took a step back to take it all in.

Scarlett: I went down to the runway immediately and was part of the crush. There was one huge hive of media with flashbulbs and cameras and I assumed they were taking pictures of Victoria Beckham. One mother had to caution a photographer to not trample her daughter, a toddler that had somehow scored a ticket.

Kevin Christiana dropped us a line to tell us that he will be featured on Rachel Ray's show tomorrow!

Every time we look, Chloe Dao is receiving another award for something. Thanks Frank!

Katy's Take: Episode 10

Katherine Gerdes was everywhere during fashion week. But she still managed to find time to share her thoughts with us on Episode 10.

Okay… help me out here. I’m totally torn between hating and loving this challenge. Is it possible to do both? I had assumed that I would HATE everything about this episode, honestly I can’t think of anything tackier than WWE costumes except for maybe actual stripper wear, but it turned out to be entertaining and had some good results.

So now the question is; do you think “America’s next top designer” can be determined with a challenge like this (imagine if one of your favorites went home over this challenge, for me that would have been Rami getting sent home over that awful pink thing)? Or, do you think a challenge like this actually helps determine who the best designer is because it shows that they have range and can produce something great even with a ticky-tacky challenge like this?

Ugh, I still can’t decide…

BPR Interview With Victorya Hong

Who says you have to be a finalist to show at Fashion Week? Certainly not Victorya Hong. The season 4 designer decided there was no better time to capitalize on her exposure from the show and managed to beat all of her cast mates to the catwalk with her Fall 2008 collection. Victorya tells us all about it as we resume our series of aufed interviews.

BPR: Hi Victorya! We were all happily surprised to see you showing on the opening day of Fashion Week. When did you decide to pursue this?

VH: I´ve been working on getting my line off the ground since we finished taping last summer. So, it was only natural that I work on a Fall collection. It really started coming together in December. Jackie, my model from the show, would come over to fit my samples. Of course, everything looks great on her, so I don´t know if it was an accurate barometer...but the line was looking really strong. With her encouragement, I started to really explore the possibility of showing.

BPR: What is the inspiration for your new collection?

VH: It was very 80s inspired. I am a voracious visual consumer when I begin to research a line. I watched movies, 80s sitcoms, and pored through magazines and images. It was actually pretty fun because the 80s is really my era.

Click here to continue reading our interview with Victorya as she talks about her experiences on the show and picks who she thinks will win Season 4.

ANTM at the PR Finale

We have been recieving many comments and e-mails about young women from "America's Next Top Model" walking in the Project Runway Finale Show. I wasn't completely certain of the accuracy of these claims - especially the correct spelling of the names and their particular "cycle." So I went to the definitive source on all things ANTM - Rich at FourFour - for confirmation.

Danielle, winner of Cycle Six is on the left, modeling for Chris March.
In the center is Jaslene, the winner of Cycle Eight, modeling for Jillian.
Bianca, of Cycle Nine (coming in fourth) is on the right, also modeling for Chris.

Thanks Rich!

Team BPR Visits Andy's Office!

One of the big highlights of our trip to NYC last week was the chance to visit the famous office digs of Andy Cohen, Bravo's Senior Vice President of Programming & Production. Our love of all things Andy is well documented and his office is better than advertised, filled with all sorts of TV memorobilia and kitsch. "More like a dorm room", as Andy puts it.

We shot a quick video interview with Andy on our visit and wanted to share it with you today as we prepare to watch Bravo's "20 Most Outrageous Moments" tonight at 10:00 p.m. We try to pry a few of the PR moments that made the list out of Andy and also ask the burning questions only we could think of like "What is your favorite color?" and "What do you take in your coffee?" Check it out!

Thanks to Andy and all the crew at Bravo for their welcome and hospitality.

Supernova : English Translation : Bump of Chicken

Supernova: Bump of Chicken
Translation by Melissa Chasse ©

When I get a fever I realize
That I have a body
When my nose gets stuffy I realize
That I’ve been breathing all this time

You’re existence
I make sure of it so many times but
You know how truly precious someone is
Once they’re gone

When I refused your outstretched hand
There might have been a big earthquake
When I protected your outstretched hand
The one I wanted to protect may have been myself

You’re existence
I always held on to it so tightly but
I’m really afraid so
I just can’t let go

La la la…

Talking to people I realize
There’s nothing I want to say
When I try to put the words together
I understand I’m full of feelings I want to express

Your existence
I can keep talking about it like this but
true gratitude
Can’t be expressed by a mere “thank you”

La la la…

In our clock (In the time we have)
We want
to grasp just one truth
and pass it on…

When I try to count the years, I realize
However slight, I had a history
At almost the same time I understand
An end will come to that, too

I can remember you whenever I want but
What I really want is
Not memories, it’s the present

It's after I forget you that I remember
I had a history with you
It's after I loose you that I discover
I met you by chance

A person’s existence
In this world is worthless, but
Somebody’s world
Can be built on it

Your existence
I confirm it so many times, but
Your true existence is that
Even when you’re gone, you’re here

Our clock doesn’t stop
It’s moving

La la la…
